The preparation:

  1. Gather all your ingredients and wash the vegetables.

  2. If you like, peel the vegetables and then cut them into bite-sized pieces. If you prefer to eat them with the skin on, that's fine too.

  3. Cut the meat into thin, long pieces. You should be able to wrap it around the vegetables two or three times later.

  4. If you are using unseasoned pork instead of bacon, season it now with salt and pepper.

  5. Now wrap the meat around the vegetables and start rolling it up like sushi. Once you're done, put some starch on the Niku Maki.

  6. Heat oil in a pan and fry the Niku Maki on all sides.

  7. It tastes especially good if you add soy sauce, mirin and sake to the Niku Maki in the pan and let them cook for one minute with the lid closed.

  8. If you want to save a few calories, or don't like fatty food so much, place the finished Niku Maki on a piece of kitchen paper. It absorbs the excess oil.

  9. Now the Niku Maki are ready and you can serve them garnished with a lemon or lime.

    Niku-Maki: The "other" Sushi

“Niku” means meat and “Maki” means roll. A perfect name for these crispy and delicious meat rolls with vegetable filling. The rolls are guaranteed never to be boring, because you can combine them with different vegetables as you like.

Niku Maki are especially delicious with miso soup and rice. But they are also great as a snack in the Bento box, as they keep well and are really delicious even cold!

    Vegetables / Contents

Be creative and try different fillings to find your personal favorites! Not sure where to start? Here are some popular ingredients that are often used:

    • Green Asparagus
    • Enoji Mushrooms
    • Nira (Japanese Chives)
    • Erengi Mushrooms
    • Bell pepper
    • Bean sprouts
    • Thinly sliced carrots
    • Cheese in combination with the above ingredients
    • and much more...

Tip: When combining several ingredients, make sure they have about the same cooking time so that they are ready together. Also choose ingredients that are not too small, as they could easily fall out when frying.

    Have fun trying it out!
